PFLAG Dunedin had a wonderful time participating in the St. Pete Pride Parade and Festival on June 25th and 26th, 2016. An estimated 260,000 people attended Pride Weekend, with over 4,500 people marching in the parade, which included a processional honoring the 49 lives lost in the Orlando tragedy.
Our PFLAG group had a nice crowd of marchers at the parade, including board members, family, and friends. We were placed close to the end of the parade this year, which gave us a lot of time to walk around the parade staging area, meeting other groups that were marching. The mood this year was a combination of celebration and mourning, with so many of our minds focused on the recent attack on the LGBT community at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando.
At the Festival on Sunday the 26th, our table was quite busy. We met lots of people – some dropped by to donate to our group, others stopped in to give us a few words of thanks for our work, while other people came with questions and interest in our monthly support meetings. All in all, it was an inspiring and successful St. Pete Pride, and we look forward to participating again in 2017.
